Taller Women by Year 2000 (1949)

The December 24, 1949 Daily Capital News (Jefferson City, MO) ran an Associated Press article titled, "Authorities Predict Gals Will 'Rise' to New Heights by 2000." An excerpt along with the piece in its entirety appear below.

"Nature seems bent on producing a new race of Amazons. Within the next 50 years you'll find the emancipated woman engaging actively in such sports as football, baseball and soccer. She'll think nothing of chopping the wood and acting as family car mechanic."

Wow! They anticipated supermodels!

I'm more interested in how they were able to predict the Princess Leia slave girl outfit from Return of the Jedi...uncanny!

January 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

How much is that in centimetres? From about 155 to 185?

January 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSalo

As nice as it wold be to have a flying car, it is nothing compared to the need for 6'1" women in skanky valkyrie inspired outfits.

January 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

rachel: I think not so much Princess Leia, but an overall Xena, thing.

Salo: I think that's about right.

January 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterArkonbey

6'1" = 185.42 cm

A website I can't find any longer predicted tall and busty Marylin Monroe-like women (to attact a mate) and short weak men with huge heads.
(as machines would perform all manual labor and men design and operate them. They predicted Nerds.)

Um... Now that I think of it... that web article seems Onionish.

My wife is six feet tall and has a size 11 shoe, now if I can only get her to wear that outfit.

January 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChuchundra

Uh...that was a bit accurate, but not entirely. I'm a size 11 in clothing, but I'm only 5'5". In this "future," women (and men) have only grown in girth, not so much in height.

I shudder to think how far this will go...in 2050, XXL will be the "average" size and XL will be considered "petite and slender." The average lifespan will end at 50, usually due to a massive coronary.

January 5, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjanevalenz

They meant her feet are (would be?) size 11, I think. (I'm a height throwback to 1900, but with 1950s feet...)

January 6, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Actually, European men are increasing in height but Americans aren't because they don't take care of themselves. Poor nutrition.

January 16, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterkk

I think that women have gotten taller. Every girl I know grows taller than her mother.

January 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterScott Haley

My brothers are well over 6ft and dad is under it. They joke on that, but it holds true to my european family on both sides, the boys are giants compared to their dads. Girls and moms are both tall. My mum was Twiggy-like model of her decade (she would not make it in the business now since she is under the current height demands) I'm just little taller with bigger feet. I guess the surge in nutrition after the WW2 made bigger humans but it has slowed down due to less nutritious food and obesity-problem.
Though I disagree with the aging thing, I saw a picture of my great-grandma celebrating her 50th bitrhday in 1930s and she looked like 80-year old looks like today. More leisure means less stressfull life and causes us to age slower.

I'm off to chop wood and to repair my dad's volkswagen.

All that 2000 gal needs is her sword and shield, as opposed to ray gun, considering how she's dressed. Why would futurists think we'd be dressing like fantasy ancient Greeks in the next century?

January 7, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

Oh, she'll be chopping wood will she?

July 29, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterpsCargile

Hehe that's pretty accurate actually. I'm 180 cm! The outfit on that girl isn't too far away from what some people would wear either, just change the hair and put some leggings on her and she's spot on!

They got the height right, and the shortness(and skinrevealing nature) of the dresses too
